Women's hoops suffers setback at Youngstown State

Final Stats

Youngstown, Ohio -  Youngstown State hit 13 three-pointers and held the Stony Brook women's basketball team to 28% shooting in a 76-43 victory over the Seawolves on Friday night in Youngstown, Ohio. Senior Jessica Previlon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with 13 points and six rebounds.


Coach's Reaction

"Youngstown State did a very good job of scoring from the outside tonight. We defended well in spurts but unfortunately a few costly turnovers allowed them to go on a run. Our team effort on the road this week has been good, but we will continue to work on getting better with our execution on both sides of the floor."

Turning Point

  • The Penguins (5-1) seized control early and built a 33-24 lead at the half. Scoring the first nine points in the second stanza, Youngstown State pushed its advantage to 42-24 as Stony Brook's shooting went cold (23% in the second half). The hosts proceeded to score 34 of the next 50 points in the game, hitting 8-of-11 second-half three-pointers to blow it open. 

The Numbers Game

  • The Seawolves (3-3) made just 15-of-53 field goals (28%), while Youngstown State converted 25-of-52 (48%).
  • Youngstown State shot the lights out from downtown, converting 13-of-25 three-point attempts (52%).
  • The Penguins outrebounded Stony Brook by a slim 34-33 margin.
  • The Seawolves turned the ball over 18 times, including seven in the first eight minutes.
  • Junior Chikilra Goodman (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a season-high eight points and dished out five assists.
  • Redshirt freshman Miranda Jenkins (Gibsonville, N.C.) and junior Latasia Ward (Bronx, N.Y.) each scored their first points in a Stony Brook uniform.
  • Liz Hornberger led four Penguins in double-figures with 15 points.

News & Notes

  • The Seawolves allowed 70+ points for the first time since Jan. 12, 2012 against UMBC (73). 
  • Stony Brook was outrebounded for just the second time this season (Rider).

Up Next

After posting a 2-2 record on its four-game road trip, the Seawolves will return home to face Sacred Heart on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
