Worcester, Mass. -
The Stony Brook baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped on Sunday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the Holy Cross Crusaders. SBU lost game one, 3-1 before Holy Cross rallied for a 5-3 victory in the second game.
Sophomore right-hander Frankie Vanderka (Levittown, N.Y.) went the distance in the opening game, as he allowed three runs on four hits in his 6.0 innings and did not walk a batter. Senior Evan Stecko-Haley (Coral Springs, Fla.) battled to a no-decision in game two, allowing two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings.
Stony Brook jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first game on a solo home run from freshman Kevin Courtney (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). But Holy Cross answered back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run from Mike Ahmed.
The Crusaders added a run in the fifth on an Andrew Barry RBI double to make it 3-1. Junior Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) reached third with two outs in the sixth but Holy Cross starter Tom Marra got junior William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) to ground out to end the inning.
Marra then retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
Holy Cross jumped in front with a run in the second in game two but Stony Brook tied it in the fifth on an RBI groundout from senior Sal Intagliata (Franklin Square, N.Y.). The Seawolves then took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on an RBI double from Carmona and a run-scoring single from junior Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario).
The Crusaders got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2.
The score stayed that way until the eighth, when Holy Cross struck for three runs to take a 5-3 lead. The Crusaders tied the game on an RBI single from Jordan Enos, who eventually came around to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
John Colella, who came on to record the final out of the seventh, then pitched a perfect ninth inning as Holy Cross completed the sweep.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, hosting New York Tech for a doubleheader.
