Setting the Scene: Seeded No. 4 in the Coral Gables Regional, the No. 25 Stony Brook University baseball team opens the 2012 NCAA Division I Baseball championship against host and top seed Miami (FL) (36-21) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Alex Rodriguez Park.
No. 2 Central Florida (43-15) and No. 3 Missouri State (39-20) open the Coral Gables Regional at 2 p.m. on Friday. Regional play follows a double-elimination tournament and continues through Monday. Game times for Saturday and Sunday also will be 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the if necessary game on Monday set for 7 p.m.
About the Seawolves: Stony Brook enters the Regional with a school record 46 wins and the top winning percentage (.807) in the nation. The Seawolves made their first ever appearance in the Baseball America Poll on Monday, coming in at No. 25. SBU also moved up to No. 29 in the NCBWA poll, after appearing at No. 30 the previous week. The Seawolves have won 11 straight games and 22 of their last 23. SBU is also the only team in Division I to rank in the top 10 in batting average, ERA and fielding percentage.
Path to the Coral Gables Regional: Stony Brook went 21-3 in conference play on its way to a second straight America East regular season title. SBU swept through the America East tournament with a perfect 3-0 record, defeating Maine 13-6 in the final to secure the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Junior reliever
James Campbell pitched 4.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory in the title game and was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player. Campbell also picked up the save in the 7-4 win over Binghamton the previous day in the winner' bracket game. Junior
Travis Jankowski hit .600 (9-for-15) in the three games, scored seven runs and had five RBI while junior
Maxx Tissenbaumhad seven hits in 10 at-bats and had five RBI.
Last Regional Apperance: The Seawolves last appeared in the Division I Baseball Championship at the 2010 Myrtle Beach Regional. Seeded No. 4, the Seawolves lost to No. 1 Coastal Carolina in its first game. But SBU rebounded to defeat North Carolina State, 6-2, in an elimination game the next day to earn its first Division I NCAA tournament victory.
Tyler Johnsonpicked up the win against the Wolfpack, allowing just two runs in 8.0 innings. Stony Brook was then eliminated by Coastal the next day. There are eight players that played in the Myrtle Beach Regional that will suit up for SBU this weekend.
Stony Brook vs. the Field: Stony Brook has never Missouri State and last played UCF in 2006 when it was swept in a three-game series. The Seawolves had one previous meeting with the Hurricanes, dropping a 9-8 10-inning decision on March 19, 2003. Then Miami freshman Ryan Braun drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded single.
Scouting Miami (FL): A four-time national champion, Miami is making its record 40th straight Regional appearance and is hosting a Regional for the 24th time. Ranked No. 23 in the lastest ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, the Hurricanes are 36-21 and advanced to the ACC title game. Miami is led by a pitching staff that is 12th in the country in ERA (2.99). Offensivley the Hurricanes are led by senior catcher Peter O'Brien, who is the only Miami player hitting over .300 (.338).
