Volleyball heads to Yale Classic this weekend

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University volleyball team travels to its second straight tournament this weekend as it plays in the Yale Classic. The Seawolves open against American on Friday at 5 p.m. before facing off against the host Bulldogs and Texas A&M on Saturday.

Last time out
The Seawolves hit .310 on their way to a sweep (25-13, 25-15, 25-20) of the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday at the Black Knight Invitational, picking up their first win of 2012. SB dropped a tough five-setter to Army (23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 15-13) in its second match of the day despite 22 kills from freshman Melissa Rigo, who was named to the All-Tournament team.

Seawolves News & Notes
Rigo was named America East Player & Rookie of the Week on Monday ... Stony Brook's four freshman combined for 95 kills, 117 assists and 59 digs at the Black Knight Invitational ... Rigo averaged 4.25 kills per set on a .313 hitting percentage for the weekend .. freshman setter Nicole Vogel averaged 9.33 assists per set over her first three collegiate matches and also guided SB to a .310 hitting percentage in the sweep of Quinnipiac.

Scouting the Yale Classic
American went 23-11 last season on its way to its 10th Patriot League title in 11 years. Sophomore Sara Rishel1 earned Patriot League Player & Rookie of the Year honors last season for the Eagles, who split matches with George Mason and Georgetown last weekend. Texas A&M enters its first season in the SEC after going 23-8 and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2011. The Aggies went 2-1 last weekend with the lone loss coming to then-No. 5 USC. Yale is coming off its second straight Ivy League title. The Bulldogs return eight from last year's squad including junior setter Kendall Polan, the 2011 Ivy League Player of the Year. This will be opening weekend of play for Yale.
