Volleyball edged by Seton Hall in five sets

South Orange, N.J., - Freshman Melissa Rigo (East Northport, N.Y.) posted a 21-kill night, freshman Stephanie McFadden (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) chipped in 16 kills and a .500 hitting percentage and freshman Nicole Vogel (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had 45 assists and 19 digs, but the Stony Brook volleyball team narrowly succumbed to the Seton Hall Pirates in a five-set thriller (25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 14-25, 15-11) in the first match of the Seton Hall Invitational.

The Numbers Game

  • Rigo now has four matches of 20 or more kills this season.
  • McFadden's 16 kills are a career high, and she also posted six blocks.

  • Junior Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) also posted double-digit kills with 11.
  • Stony Brook is now 2-3 in five set matches this season and 4-7 on the season.

Key Moments

  • After dropping the first set, the Seawolves fell behind Seton Hall in the second set, 8-1, but battled back to tie it at 19-19 before picking up the set win on a Rigo kill at 25-23.
  • SB dominated the fourth set with a 10-3 run and hitting at a 25.6 percent clip en route to a 25-14 set win.
  • Stony Brook and Seton Hall were tied 10-10 in the fifth set, but the Pirates pulled away with four straight points, including a pair of blocks by Amanda Hansen and Molly Grammar. 
  • The Pirates had just one error to 10 kills in the deciding fifth set.

The Seawolves will play Morgan State Saturday at 11 a.m. to wrap up its appearance at the SHU Invitational.
