Late equalizer helps women's soccer earn draw vs. Loyola

Stony Brook, N.Y. - A late equalizer from freshman Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) propelled the Stony Brook women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against Loyola (Md) on Friday at LaValle Stadium.

"This was a very fast-paced, competitive and fair game and that's exactly what we wanted heading into conference play. I'm proud of our team for our resiliency. It takes a lot to come back and keep fighting after you fall behind. The whole game was a dogfight and we worked through it, matching their physicality and I think a draw was a fair result for both sides."

Loyola grabbed the lead just 1:15 into the second half when Katelyn McFadden cut past two defenders on the right wing and unleashed a shot through a screen from the top of the box into the bottom left corner
Edwards produced the equalizer at 83:50 when freshman Stella Norman's shot from outside the box deflected off Edwards' back and into the net

Junior Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.) was busy, making seven saves, including five in the first 30 minutes of play
With the draw, Stony Brook remains unbeaten at home in 2012 with a 3-0-2 record
The Seawolves, who were ranked 61st in the nation in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 64 Poll this week, wrap up non-conference play with a 6-2-2 record overall

Just minutes before Edwards tied the game, the West Orange, N.J. native nearly volleyed home a cross from the left wing, but her attempt went just wide of the left post
With the score tied 1-1 in the first overtime, freshman Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.) did well to create space for herself in the box, but her turn-around effort sailed just wide
