Women's soccer drops 1-0 decision at Yale

New Haven, Conn. - Despite outshooting Yale by a 15-8 margin, the Stony Brook women's soccer team (3-1-1) dropped its first game of the 2013 season with a 1-0 defeat on Friday in New Haven, Conn. Yale's Melissa Gavin scored the game's only goal in the 17th minute to give the hosts a win in their season opener. 

The Seawolves battled hard to find an equalizer in the second half, outshooting the Bulldogs by a 12-3 clip in the frame, but could not find the net. Yale keeper Rachel Ames made four saves, including a diving stop on a header by senior Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) early in the second half.

Goal Recaps

• The Bulldogs (1-0) struck at the 16:04 mark when Frannie Coxe and Gavin combined on a give-and-go in the offensive zone. Taking a pass from Coxe just inside the box, Gavin drilled a left-footed strike by Seawolves' keeper Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.) to make it 1-0.

• Stony Brook held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. 
• Nysch and sophomore Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.) each had four shots to lead the Seawolves.
• Castanio made three stops for SBU.

• With the defeat, Stony Brook's four-game unbeaten streak comes to an end.
• The Seawolves were held without a goal for the first time this season.
