Albany, N.Y. – The Stony Brook volleyball team saw its seven-match winning streak come to an end in a 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-9) defeat at Albany Friday night. Redshirt junior Kathy Fletcher posted her third straight double-double on a match-high 18 kills and 12 digs. She added seven stuffs.

Redshirt senior Evann Slaughter tied a career-high with 10 blocks, all assisted, as Stony Brook (11-8, 2-1 America East) out-blocked Albany (5-11, 3-1), 15-11. Senior Taylor Gillie chimed in with eight stuffs.

Redshirt junior Lo Hathaway led the match with 25 digs, and junior Nicole Vogel recorded a contest-best 40 assists and had seven digs.

Recap

  • Stony Brook led, 20-16, late in the first set when Fletcher took a pass from Hathaway and hammered it home. Melissa Rigo followed with three straight kills to stretch the margin to eight, 24-16. The Great Danes briefly staved off defeat with a kill, but Fletcher put the stanza away with a smack of her own.
  • Stony Brook trailed by as many as 10 three times in the second frame, including a 21-11 deficit. Kills by Rigo and Fletcher and a Great Danes miscue got SBU within seven, 21-14, but Albany scored the next two points for a nine-point advantage. Stony Brook came alive thereafter, using dominant performances by Fletcher and Slaughter to score eight straight points and slice the deficit to one, 23-22. During the gutsy run, Slaughter and Fletcher teamed up for three stuffs and scored two kills apiece. The home team scored a kill for a set-point opportunity, but Fletcher responded with a slam and then combined with Gillie for a stuff as the Seawolves—unbelievably—found themselves even with Albany, 24-24.  The Great Danes recovered and scored two straight points for the second-set victory.
  • Albany pulled away late in the third set and jumped out to a large lead in the fourth set to seal the win.

By the Numbers

  • Rigo recorded nine kills and 15 digs.
  • Slaughter tallied seven kills.
  • Freshman Dani Nizich tallied a season-high 12 digs.
  • Junior Stephanie McFadden finished with three block assists.

  • Slaughter passed Cynthia Orengo for second in school history for block assists. Slaughter has tallied 252 combo-stuffs, and Orengo recorded 246 from 1997-00. Danielle MacKnight (2001-04) holds the record of 320 block assists.
  •  Rigo has 981 kills for her career. With 19 more kills, she will become the ninth player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills.
