Warney, Puriefoy double-doubles lead #Seawolves over St. Thomas Aquinas

Nov. 29, 2014

Final Stats

TICKETS TO DEC. 21 vs. LOYOLA MARYLAND

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) turned in a balanced effort with 15 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and four assists, junior Carson Puriefoy (Wenonah, N.J.) recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore Kameron Mitchell (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored a career-high 14 points as the Stony Brook men's basketball team pushed past St. Thomas Aquinas, 70-49, Saturday at Island Federal Credit Union Arena in the final game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

The #Seawolves have now won four straight games, all coming in just the last seven days, and improve to 5-2 on the season while also remaining unbeaten at home (4-0). St. Thomas Aquinas fell to 1-4.

Head Coach Steve Pikiell's Reaction
"It's been a lot of games in a short amount of time, so I was nervous about this game. But we approached it the right way, got off to a good start. They scored 16 points in the first half, so our defense carried us. We're on to Cincinnati, and we only have one day to prepare for them."

Turning Point
St. Thomas Aquinas grabbed its only lead of the game at the 18:19 mark of the first half, 6-5, and from that point on it was all #Seawolves. Stony Brook went on a 22-4 run as its trademark defense held the Spartans under double digits until the 5:04 mark. The #Seawolves limited STAC to 2-for-19 shooting and four turnovers in that 13-minute span.

Four different #Seawolves scored at least seven points in that first half, including Mitchell, who knocked down a trifecta of three-pointers, including one at the first half buzzer to send Stony Brook into halftime up 37-16.

St. Thomas Aquinas only got as close as 16 points in the second half, and the #Seawolves quickly squashed that rally as Mitchell dropped in a layup on a nice feed from Sturidvant, who followed on the next possessions with a layup from Puriefoy. Warney then punctuated the game by breaking out of a triple team on the block and going underneath the basket around for two-handed slam. Jameel Warney's big dunk">(WATCH THE CLIP)

Stony Brook's largest lead of the game was 26 late second half after back-to-back three-pointers from Mitchell and redshirt freshman Roland Nyama, and Warney executed a great high-low pass to junior Rayshaun McGrew (Chicago, Ill.) for an easy layup to make it 66-40.
