Stony Brook, N.Y. — Fueled by senior Sabre Proctor’s 21 points and 11 rebounds, the Stony Brook women’s basketball team ended non-conference play on a high note with a 52-46 win over Norfolk State in the Seawolves Holiday Classic Presented by Hilton Garden Inn Stony Brook. SBU was the only team in the tournament to win both games.

Proctor has 998 points in her Seawolves career and is two points shy of becoming the 14th player in program history to score 1,000 points at Stony Brook. She is poised to reach the milestone at home Saturday vs. New Hampshire at noon.

With the win, the Seawolves concluded non-conference play at 7-6 overall and 6-0 at Island Federal Credit Union Arena. Junior Brittany Snow scored 11 points, with nine coming in the second half, and sophomore Christa Scognamiglio finished with 10 points.

Norfolk State fell to 2-9 on the season.

Head Coach Caroline McCombs’ Reaction

“We played solid once again in the second half and appreciate all of our fans coming out to cheer us on. We’re happy to end non-conference play with a win and an undefeated record at our beautiful new arena. Our team will look to continue to play strong and improve heading into our conference schedule.”

Turning Point

With the score tied at 40-40 and 4:31 on the clock, Jessica Ogunnorin scored from underneath the basket to put the Seawolves in front. She grabbed the defensive rebound on a Nia Roberts miss on the other end and sank a jump shot to give Stony Brook a 44-40 lead at 3:54.

Proctor stretched the advantage to five, 45-40, when she went 1-for-2 from the line with 2:43 on the clock, but Aivah Parham cut it to three, 45-42, on a triple at 2:23. A pair of Proctor free throws put the margin back at five, 47-42, with 1:27 to play. However, Parham responded again, this time with a jumper at 1:09.

Scognamiglio fed Proctor down low for a layup with 49 ticks left to put the Seawolves ahead, 49-44. Rae Corbo knocked down a jump shot with 21 seconds to play, but Kori Bayne-Walker went 1-for-2 from the line 10 seconds later and Proctor came away with a steal on defense. She headed to the line, where she hit both free throws to seal the win.
