Ames, Iowa — The Stony Brook women’s basketball team battled the Big 12’s Iowa State point-for-point all afternoon but in the end came up just short, 74-64, in front of a crowd of 10,978 Sunday at the Hilton Coliseum. Senior Sabre Proctor led the Seawolves with 16 points despite fouling out with 9:13 left.
Senior Jessica Ogunnorin finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, and junior Brittany Snow tallied 12 points for Stony Brook (3-5).
Nikki Moody scored a game-high 24 points for Iowa State (5-1).
Head Coach Caroline McCombs’ Reaction
“I think it’s good for our players to see competition like Iowa State early in the season, and I am so proud of the effort and energy we showed for a full 40 minutes. We will take what we learned today and apply it as we begin preparation for Morgan State.”
Turning Point
Stony Brook led by as many as seven points in the first half and trailed by only two, 39-37, at the break.
The Seawolves continued to hang with their formidable foe after the intermission. A Proctor trifecta with 10:19 to play gave them their first lead of the half, 50-49, but Bryanna Fernstrom answered with a layup on the other end. Stony Brook went back ahead, 53-51, when Proctor nailed another 3-pointer at 9:33, but she was called for her fifth foul 20 seconds later.
The Cyclones appeared to seize control thereafter with a 17-7 run punctuated by a Moody 3-point play that gave them a 68-60 lead with 2:45 on the clock. However, Kori Bayne-Walker hit a pair of free throws at 2:35 and dished to Snow in transition at 2:17 to bring the Seawolves within four, 68-64.
An Emily Durr shot on the other end was off the mark, but the offensive rebound went Iowa State’s way after a scramble under the basket and referee deliberation. ISU took advantage, finally putting the Seawolves away when Moody hit a 3-pointer with Bayne-Walker’s hand in her face and 1:11 remaining.
