Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Serge Gamwanya's (Kinshasa, Congo) free kick goal in the 67th minute salvaged the Stony Brook men's soccer team (4-6-3, 1-2-1 AE) a point, as they tied Vermont (7-5-2, 2-1-2) 1-1, despite playing the final 95 minutes with a man advantage.
Anatol's Reaction
"Overall, I thought the guys battled, competed and worked hard to get back into the game, but we weren't quite good enough in the final third to win the match," said head coach Ryan Anatol. "We will take a point and move on."
Highlights
- The complexion of the match changed drastically in the 15th minute when Vermont's Jack Shea prevented sophomore Vince Erdei's (Budapest, Hungary) scoring chance with a last ditch tackle, forcing the referee to give him a red card.
- The Catamounts responded with a goal in the 42nd minute when Loftur Eriksson floated a free kick to the far post, which senior goalkeeper Jason Orban went up and caught. However, the ball came lose when he hit the ground, trickling into the net. The linesman initially waved off the goalk for a foul, but after consulting with the center ref, awarded a good goal.
- Gamwanya brought the home team level with a perfect free kick from 30 yards out into the top corner of the net midway through the second half.
- Stony Brook's best opportunity to win the match came late in the second half, but senior Alejandro Fritz's cross intended for senior Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) was cut out at the last second by a sliding defender.
- Vermont came down the other end and nearly took the lead themselves, but Brian Wright's header clanked off the crossbar.
Notes
- Gamwanya led all players with eight shots and four shots on goal.
- The Seawolves outshot the Catamounts 16-11, including 10-2 in the second half.
