Stony Brook travels to Hofstra on Tuesday night

Hempstead, N.Y. - Long Island's Division I women's basketball programs will meet on the hardwood for the first time in five seasons on Tuesday night when the Stony Brook Seawolves (1-0) play at Hofstra (1-0) at 7 p.m.

Scouting Hofstra

The Pride return 12 of 13 players from last season's 20-win team that appeared in the CAA Championship game and participated in the WNIT. Hofstra used its experience to record a season-opening win over Navy on Friday, 65-63. The Pride were particularly impressive on the glass, outrebounding the mids 52-32. Sophomore forward Ashunae Durant notched 17 points and 13 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive end. Senior Jakelle King-Gilchrist came off the bench to score 15 points. 

Series History 

Stony Brook is 1-5 all-time vs. the Pride. Hofstra won the last meeting between in the schools, 84-72, in 2010-11.

The "Big Three"

The Seawolves returned three of their top four scorers from last season in juniors Kori Bayne-Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) and Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.) and senior Brittany Snow (Shamong, N.J.). The trio picked up where they left off in 2014-15, all reaching double-figures in Stony Brook's season opener Friday night. Bayne-Walker scored a team-high 14 points, Scognamiglio added 13 points and nine boards and Snow chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Finish Strong

Stony Brook trailed Iona 53-49 with three minutes to play before closing the game on a 9-0 run. The Seawolves ramped up the intensity on the defensive end of the floor, holding Iona to 0-for-5 shooting over the game's final three minutes, while forcing the Gaels into three turnovers. 

Beasts of the Boards 

Stony Brook, the second-best rebounding team in the America East last season, was impressive on the backboards vs. Iona, outrebounding the Gaels 41-32. Snow's 10 rebounds were a team-high, while Scognamiglio added nine. Stony Brook was able to hold MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Joy Adams to just four rebounds, well behind her 2014-15 average of 12.6 per game. 

Freshmen Feature in Opening Win

Freshmen Ogechi Anyagaligbo (Miami, Fla.), Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) made their Stony Brook debuts on Friday night, all contributing to the Seawolves victory. Anyagaligbo and Matthews earned starting nods, while Wingate scored six points off the bench. Anyagaligbo led the group with nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
