New York, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team (2-1) faces a firm test on Monday, Nov. 23, when it plays its third straight road game at Columbia (3-0) at 7 p.m.
Series History
Stony Brook is 6-4 against the Lions, including wins in each of the last two seasons. Miranda Jenkins (Greensboro, N.C.) led the Seawolves with 14 points and 12 rebounds in last season’s 82-68 win.
Scouting Columbia
Stony Brook will be Columbia’s fourth consecutive America East opponent. The Lions enter Monday’s matchup 3-0 with wins over UMBC, Vermont and UMass Lowell. The frontcourt duo of Camille Zimmerman and Tori Oliver are leading the way for the Lions. Zimmerman is averaging 21.0 ppg and 9.3. rpg, while Oliver has averages of 17.0 ppg and 7.7 rpg. A key to the game will be Stony Brook’s ability to keep Columbia off the free-throw stripe, where they are shooting 85.7% (36-for-42) as a team.
Dominating Defense
Stony Brook’s defense was the story on Friday night in its 69-35 victory over Saint Peter’s. The Seawolves nearly broke their Division I program record for points allowed in a game, which is 34 set at NJIT in 2012. They held the Peackocks to 28.3% shooting for the game, while forcing them into 23 turnovers. Junior Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.) ignited the defense with a career-high six steals. For the season, Stony Brook is holding its opponents to 36.4% shooting from the field and 20.3% from deep.
Paint Wars
Stony Brook continues to win the battle in the paint. Points in the paint have accounted for 57.0% of Stony Brook’s total offense (110-of-193 total points). On Friday night, the Seawolves outscored Saint Peter’s 36-14 in the paint. Leading scorer Brittany Snow (Shamong, N.J.) did nearly all of her damage inside on her way to 19 points. Additionally, the Seawolves have made their way to the free-throw line 60 times compared to 24 for their opponents.
Davion “WIN”gate
Freshman guard Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.) is an emerging offensive weapon off the Stony Brook bench. She set a career-high with 15 points in Friday’s win over Saint Peter’s and is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per contest.
