2015-16 Schedule
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Head coach Caroline McCombs of the Stony Brook women’s basketball team has released the 2015-16 schedule, which includes a home game vs. the University of Mississippi and a road contest vs. Syracuse.
“We are excited about announcing our 2015-16 schedule,” said McCombs. “As always, our goal is to prepare our team for America East regular season and tournament play, and we believe this will give our team that opportunity!”
The non-conference schedule features 13 matchups vs. teams from eight different conferences. The Seawolves will play four games vs. IVY League opponents, two vs. teams from the NEC and MAAC, and one from the SEC, ACC, MEAC, Atlantic 10 and CAA. Six of the 13 non-conference games are at Island Federal Credit Union Arena, where the Seawolves went 11-3 a season ago, the second highest home-winning percentage in the America East.
Your first chance to see the 2015-16 Seawolves will be in their season opener vs. Iona on Nov. 13 at IFCU Arena. Stony Brook has won its last two home openers, including a 56-40 triumph over St. Peter’s in its first game in IFCU Arena history last season.
On Nov. 17 the Seawolves will renew its Long Island rivalry with Hofstra. The Pride went 20-13 in 2014-15, losing to James Madison in the CAA Championship. The two schools haven’t met since 2010-11.
The Seawolves host Ole Miss on Nov. 27 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Rebels went 19-14 last season, advancing to the third round of the Postseason WNIT. It will be the first time the Seawolves have ever played an SEC school.
On Dec. 6, McCombs’ troops will head to Syracuse to face the Orange. Syracuse is fresh off a 22-win season in 2014-15, which included an 11-5 record in ACC play and a bid in the NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Nebraska in their first game. The Orange would eventually be bounced by South Carolina, who managed to advance to the Final Four. The Orange finished the season with a no. 32 ranking in the RPI.
The Seawolves will open conference play at home vs. the Binghamton Bearcats on January 6. Four-time reigning America East Champion, Albany, comes to Island Federal Credit Union Arena on Feb. 17. The Seawolves upset the Great Danes at IFCU last season, 68-64, and are 2-3 against their in-state rival over the last two seasons.
Stony Brook returns seven letterwinners from last year’s team, including three of its top four scorers in senior Brittany Snow (Shamong, N.J.) and juniors Kori Bayne-Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) and Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.J.). Bayne-Walker was named to the all-conference second team, while Snow landed on the third team. In McCombs’ first season, the Seawolves finished 17-14, good for third place in the America East regular season.
