The Stony Brook women's basketball team (11-5, 3-0 AE) looks to improve on its 3-0 start to conference play this weekend when it hosts New Hampshire (6-9, 0-2 AE) on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. and Hartford on Monday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m.

Scouting New Hampshire

The Wildcats and Seawolves are trending in opposite directions entering Saturday’s tilt. While the Seawolves have won seven straight, their opponent is on a seven-game losing streak after starting the season 6-2. Elizabeth Belanger is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder with averages of 15.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Carlie Pogue and Corinne Coia also average in double figures at 11.1 and 10.7 points per game, respectively. The Wildcats are 0-2 in America East action with losses to Binghamton and Albany.

Series History

The Wildcats hold a 20-13 lead in the all-time series. The teams split last season’s meetings, each winning 60-52.

Scouting Hartford

Hartford is 5-10 and 1-1 in conference play, with a game vs. Vermont on Sat., Jan. 16. The Hawks have struggled to score the ball, ranking last in the conference in points per game (50.6). Deanna Mayza is the only player to average in double figures in scoring at 11.7 ppg, while Darby Lee is second on the team in scoring at 7.1 ppg. Hartford ranks last in the conference in field goal percentage (33.8%), but can stroke it from deep, ranking second in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (31.9%). Katelyn Skinner is the top three-point shooter on the team, hitting on 38.5 % of her tries, the fourth best mark in the conference.

Overtime Breakthrough

Wednesday’s victory at UMBC was the first overtime win by the Seawolves since Feb. 24, 2007 when they defeated Vermont 96-87. Stony Brook lost the five previous overtime contests, including a double overtime defeat vs. St. Bonaventure earlier this season. Stony Brook solved its overtime woes quickly on Wednesday, scoring the first 10 points of the period.

Three-Point Barrage

Stony Brook’s 10 made three-point field goals at UMBC were its most since Dec. 7, 2001 when they made 11 at Georgia State. Junior Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.) drained four threes, while senior Kim Hanlon (White Plains, N.Y.) and sophomore Aaliyah Worley (Philadelphia, Pa.) made two. Stony Brook’s previous season-high was six at Columbia.

Don’t Call it a Comeback

The Seawolves have staged second half comebacks of nine points or more in three of their last four wins. On Wednesday, they stormed back from a 13-point deficit, reeling off a 16-0 run during the third quarter.  Stony Brook is 3-3 this season when trailing at halftime.
