Burlington, Vt. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team (16-12, 8-7 AE) closes out its regular season on Sunday at Vermont at 2 p.m. Depending on the weekend's results, Stony Brook could finish anywhere from a three-seed to a six-seed for the conference tournament next weekend. The Seawolves would clinch the three-seed with a win and Binghamton loss at Maine.
Scouting Vermont
The Catamounts (8-20, 3-12 AE) defeated New Hampshire on Wednesday, 69-63, for its first conference victory in its last eight tries. The Catamounts will be without leading scorer Andreana Thomas on Sunday and will turn to Sydney Smith for scoring. She is averaging 10.8 points per game and shooting 34.1% from behind the arc and scored 19 points in the win over the Wildcats. Candice Wright scored 21 points in Thursday’s win and is averaging 6.5 points per game. The Catamounts own the no. 1 field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 37.4% shooting, but are eighth in scoring defense (64.3 ppg).
Series History
Vermont leads the all-time series, 16-14, but the Seawolves have won six of the last seven, including a 73-59 victory earlier in the season. Brittany Snow finished with 24 points and eight rebounds in the first meeting.
Snow Honored with Haier Achievement Award
Senior Brittany Snow has been selected a recipient of the Haier Achievement Award, presented to student-athletes for their accomplishments beyond sports. She will be recognized at the men’s basketball quarterfinal game on Wed., Mar. 2. Snow is one of eight student-athletes to be recognized, joining Kelly Thomson (Kansas State University), a junior women's basketball player; Megan Fish (University of Central Florida), a senior women's soccer player; Malcolm Mitchell (University of Georgia), a senior football player; senior swimmer Emily Fogle (Purdue University); and Femi Hollinger-Franzen (Indiana University), a senior men's soccer player; Imani Boyette (University of Texas), a senior women's basketball player; and Jesse Gunter (Baldwin Wallace University), a senior wrestler.
Haier will invite fans to vote online, at www.HaierAchievemnt.com, for the Haier Ultimate Achievement Award winner. The winner will earn his/her school a $5,000 donation to the general scholarship fund and a Haier 48-inch LED HD television.
Getting Out of the Gates
The Seawolves have been slow out of the gates over the last seven contests, scoring under 10 points in six of the last seven first quarters. Over that span they are averaging 6.7 points in the first quarters of games, 14.7 in the second quarters, 13.4 in the third quarters and 14.7 in the fourth quarters.
