Stony Brook hosts UMass Lowell Saturday

The Stony Brook women's basketball team (14-8, 6-3 AE) will host the UMass Lowell River Hawks (3-18, 0-9 AE) on Sat., Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. in the team's annual pink game, honoring survivors and victims of breast cancer.

Scouting UMass Lowell

Despite being winless in nine conference games, the River Hawks (3-18, 0-9 AE) can score the basketball, ranking fourth in the conference in scoring offense (59.6 ppg). They have three players who average in double figures in scoring, led by senior Lindsey Doucette (14.4 ppg, 8.5 rpg). Forward Kayla Gibbs is also a handful inside, averaging 12.5 ppg and 8.1 rpg. The River Hawk bigs are a threat to step outside and knock it down from distance. As a team, UMass Lowell shoots 32.7% from three, the top mark in the conference. Holding the River Hawks back are turnovers. They average a conference-high 20.9 turnovers per game, also ranking last with a -7.24 turnover margin.

Series History

The all-time series history narrowly favors Stony Brook 7-6, but the Seawolves are 5-0 vs. the River Hawks at the Division I level. Stony Brook won the first matchup of the season on Jan. 9, 64-50, behind 17 points from senior Brittany Snow (Shamong, N.J.) and a career-high 12 points from sophomore Elizabeth Manner (Vienna, Va.).

Welcome to the Island

The Seawolves are 8-2 at Island Federal Credit Union Arena this season and have won the last seven on their home court. Since the arena’s opening at the start of the 2014-15 season, Stony Brook has compiled a 19-5 record at home.

Give them the “Biz”ness

Sophomore Elizabeth Manner (Vienna, Va.) was a bright spot in Stony Brook’s loss at Binghamton scoring nine points and corralling a career-high nine rebounds. With an increased role in conference play, Manner is averaging 6.6 ppg and 4.3 rpg.

Defense Digs In

Stony Brook’s defense held Binghamton to 17 first half points, the third time this season they have held an opponent to that total. The Bearcats shot just 28.6% from the field in the first half and 35.8% for the game.
