McCombs announces 2016-2017 women's basketball schedule

Full 2016-17 Schedule

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team unveiled its 2016-17 schedule on Wednesday highlighted by a home game vs. NCAA national runner-up Syracuse on Nov. 18.

The Seawolves will be tested early as their first three opponents all enjoyed 20+ win seasons in 2015-16.

"We have put together a challenging non-conference schedule that will prepare us for America East play." said head coach Caroline McCombs. "It will also give our fans an opportunity to come out to Island Federal Credit Union Arena and cheer us on against some familiar New York teams."

"We will be tested right off the bat with a road game on opening night at Iona, followed by home games against Hofstra and Syracuse," continued McCombs. "Our young ladies have been preparing this offseason for the opportunities that lie ahead and we are excited to take the court and represent Stony Brook University."

Stony Brook opens the season at Iona on Nov. 11. The Gaels went 23-12 last season, winning the MAAC title and appearing in the NCAA Tournament. It will be a rematch of last season's opener, which the Seawolves won 58-53.

Stony Brook's home opener is set for Nov. 14 when the Seawolves will battle Long Island foe Hofstra. The Pride, fresh off a 25-9 season, finished second in the CAA and made a run to the WNIT Quarterfinals. They defeated Harvard, Villanova and Virginia in their first three games of the tournament.

On Nov. 18 the Seawolves will host Syracuse. The Orange went on a memorable run in the NCAA Tournament this March, culminating with a loss to UConn in the national title game. Stony Brook held a two-point halftime lead over Syracuse at the Carrier Dome last season before the Orange pulled away for a 64-49 victory.
After a home game vs. Columbia on Nov. 22 and an away game vs. Manhattan on Nov. 26, Stony Brook will travel to St. Bonaventure, one of four opponents who made the NCAA Tournament in 2015-16.

The Bonnies went 24-8 in 2015-16, receiving an at-large berth into the big dance and defeating Oklahoma State in the first round.

After away games vs. LIU Brooklyn (Dec. 4) and Central Connecticut State (Dec. 11) and a home game vs. Molloy (Dec. 16), the Seawolves will head to Orlando, Florida to compete in the Florida Sunshine Classic against Florida A&M (Dec. 20) and Indiana (Dec. 21).

The Hoosiers recorded 21 wins a season ago, finishing fourth in the Big Ten. They would go on to defeat Georgia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before bowing out to top-seeded Notre Dame in the second round.

Stony Brook's non-conference schedule closes out with back-to-back home games vs. Cornell and UMKC on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31.

Stony Brook's 13 non-conference opponents went a combined 223-185 (.547) in 2015-16. Syracuse (12), St. Bonaventure (34), Indiana (46) and Hofstra (75) finished the year with RPI rankings inside the top 100, while six opponents finished the year with winning records.

The Seawolves will open conference play in Durham, New Hampshire on Jan. 4 with a date vs. the Wildcats. The conference home opener is slated for Jan. 14 at Island Federal Credit Union Arena vs. Maine, the team that eliminated the Seawolves from the conference tournament in the America East semifinal. The conference schedule requires all nine teams to play each other twice, once at home and once on the road. Five-time reigning America East Champion, Albany, ventures to Stony Brook on Feb. 4.

The Seawolves are fresh off back-to-back 17 win seasons and consecutive trips to the WBI. Senior guards Kori Bayne-Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) and Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.) lead a group of seven returners.

Bayne-Walker enters the season second in program history in assists, 77 shy of the record, while Scognamiglio ranks t-6th in made three-point field goals (99).

Also returning is sophomore Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.), who averaged 8.7 ppg en route to America East All-Rookie honors.
