STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Head women's basketball coach
Caroline McCombs announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, Nov. 8 during the NCAA's early signing period.
The 2021-22 class consists of guard Courtney Furr and guard/forward LaNiya Miller. Both Furr and Miller are proven winners on the court and in the classroom, and will join the Seawolves' program as freshman in 2018-19.
"We are thrilled to add Courtney Furr and LaNiya Miller to our Stony Brook women's basketball Family," McCombs said. "Our coaching staff worked very hard in trying to identify two young ladies with great character, a strong work ethic and a remarkable passion both on the basketball court and in their academic pursuit. Courtney and LaNiya embody all of these qualities and I am excited for them to help strengthen our culture moving forward.
Courtney Furr – Guard | 6-0 | Elkridge, M.D.
Furr – a four-year letter winner at Howard High School in Ellicott City, Maryland – currently serves as team captain for her high school program. The six-foot guard has helped lead Howard High School to two county championships under head coach Scott Robinson, and plays her travel basketball with the Columbia Ravens. Furr, an outstanding student, has been named to Howard High School's honor roll for four straight years. She also played lacrosse for a season while in high school.
Caroline McCombs on Furr: "Courtney has spent countless hours in the gym working on her craft. She has a tremendous ability to score the basketball and is also a very unselfish player. Her length and versatility will be a great addition to our guard play both on offense and defense."
Courtney Furr on choosing Stony Brook: "I chose Stony Brook because I wasn't just looking to be a part of a team, I was looking to be part of a family. The coaches and players were very welcoming when I came on my visit and made me feel at ease. Stony Brook also has outstanding academics, which was something that was important to me in my decision. I was excited to see that I could excel both athletically and academically at this school. Most importantly, the players, coaches, and overall family environment made Stony Brook feel like home to me."
Rome Holley – New Level Basketball (Courtney's Trainer): "Courtney's path to Stony Brook has been a very long journey. To get here, it took preparation, patience, determination, pain, adversity, maturity, and being challenged to always be better than the day before. Courtney's path is very different from the path of your average person. This is why I sit here today extremely proud of her as she beings new life with the Stony Brook women's basketball program."
LaNiya Miller– Guard/Forward | 5-10 | Piscataway, N.J.
Miller has played the past four years of varsity basketball under head coach Chris Puder at Piscataway High School, serving as team captain during her junior and senior seasons. Miller has been named Piscataway's Most Improved Player and Second-Team All Conference in 2015-16 as a sophomore, and was awarded the program's Most Valuable Player award and tabbed First-Team All Conference in 2016-17 as a junior. As a junior in 2016-17, Miller averaged a career-high 33.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game.
The guard/forward comes from a family of outstanding athletes. Miller is the daughter of Lance Miller, who played four years of Division I basketball at Villanova University. Miller's older sister – Adreana – currently plays collegiate basketball at La Salle University.
Caroline McCombs on Miller: "LaNiya has outstanding size, strength, and versatility to go along with a deadly three-point stroke. She has an excellent feel for the game and is a fierce competitor. She devotes a lot of time to working on her all-around game, which our program truly values."
LaNiya Miller on choosing Stony Brook: "I chose Stony Brook University because of its breathtaking atmosphere that instantly felt like a home away from home. Growing up, one of my biggest dreams was to play Division 1 basketball. Stony Brook also allows me to receive a great education. The program has an amazing coaching staff, a great culture, beautiful facilities, outstanding academics and a very diverse community. I am very proud to say that I am a Stony Brook Seawolf, and I look forward to continuing my athletic and academic career at such an amazing university."
Chris Puder (Piscataway High School Head Coach): "Stony Brook University is getting a truly special player in LaNiya Miller. Her passion for the game is unmatched by any player I have ever coached. There is no one that works harder on her game than LaNiya. Her enthusiasm is contagious and she works hard to make her teammates better. The America East better be prepared when facing Miller and the Seawolves for the next four years!"
Kerry Foderingham – Co-Founder of GRIT Basketball/Princeton Day School varsity coach (LaNiya's Trainer): "Stony Brook & LaNiya Miller has been brought together to do some amazing things! I have had the opportunity to work with LaNiya for several years, and her dedication, work ethic, and passion for the game is unmatched. As one of LaNiya's coaches and trainers, I have seen a determined kid that continues to grow and develop her craft to levels that most may not have thought were possible. LaNiya's ability to shoot, scoring versatility and competitive drive would be a great asset for Stony Brook. I am very excited to come out and support her and the entire Stony Brook program over the next four years!"
