Seawolves sign Shania Johnson to National Letter of Intent

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook head women's basketball coach Caroline McCombs has announced the signing of Shania Johnson (Frederick, Md.) to a National Letter of Intent. Johnson will join the Seawolves this summer for the 2017-18 season.

"Shania is a playmaker guard who can really distribute and score the ball," said McCombs. "She is feisty on both ends of the court and plays with a lot of tenacity and grit. She will bring us some leadership and experience in our backcourt."

Johnson played two seasons at Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York, where she was an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American this past year. The 5-1 guard led the Mustangs with 21.2 points per game in 2016-17 for a Monroe team that went 21-7 and advanced to the NJCAA national tournament. Johnson had 16 games of 20 or more points and six of 30 or more. Prior to Monroe, Johnson was a 1,000-point scorer at Tuscarora High School in Frederick, Maryland.

"Stony Brook is getting an outstanding player in Shania Johnson, but she's an even better person," said Monroe head coach Ricky Johns. "She will make an immediate impact on and off the court because of her willingness to improve each day. When your most talented players are the most committed, you have something special. We are extremely proud of her and look forward to her continued success at Stony Brook."

Johnson rounds out a seven-member incoming class that includes five freshmen – McKenzie Bushee (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Chantz Cherry (Decatur, Ga.), Jonae Cox (Portsmouth, Va.), India Pagan (New London, Conn.) and Hailey Zeise (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – along with junior college transfer Cheyenne Clark (Deptford, N.J.).
