STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Chemistry. It is a word that has a few meanings, but one is the complex emotional or psychological interaction between two people. This is one way to describe the relationship that Stony Brook football's redshirt senior WR Nick Anderson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) has with his redshirt junior QB Tyquell Fields (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac).

"When he (Fields) first came in I was mostly running with the twos and he was running with the twos so we were basically in every group together in every practice," Anderson said. "It is almost like all of those reps were preparing us for this year. I've been waiting for my time. It just so happened to work out this way for us to build our chemistry together over the years."

That chemistry has brought success for Anderson in 2019 heading into week seven of the season when he and the 22nd-ranked Seawolves host New Hampshire on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium (GET YOUR TICKETS NOW).

"There are certain plays when I'm not even supposed to get the ball, but he (Fields) will just give me a look and I know that he needs me to get open," Anderson said.  "That chemistry with my quarterback, the other guys in the receiver room and the coaches have all really helped me."

The help Anderson is speaking of has brought him into his own through the first six games of 2019 where he has pulled down 19 catches for 352 yards that includes a career night against second-ranked James Madison last week with seven receptions for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Prior to this season Anderson played sparingly as a true freshman in 2015 and then took a redshirt season in 2016. He then played in all 13 games in 2017 with 15 receptions and last season he logged time in five game before he missed seven games due to an injury.

During those seasons that Anderson was on the sideline, not only was he building his connection with Fields, but he was able to watch and learn from some of Stony Brook's seasoned receivers.

"Coming in there were a lot of good receivers here to learn from," Anderson recalls.  "Being able to sit under those guys and really learn from them every day made it easier for me."

During that time, Anderson also was able to build up his confidence and took that out onto the field.

"My coaches were confident in me from the get go," said Anderson. "They told when I first got here that I was physically able to play and that it was just up to me being mentally ready and being confident enough to get out there. Once I realized that my coaches had my back and that I had the guys around me to show me the ropes, it became much easier for me to step in. It took a little longer than I hoped, but I'm glad that I'm finally on the right track."

Coming to Long Island all the way from California also supplies some confidence for Anderson, despite being home sick from time-to-time.

"My whole freshman year I got really homesick and tried to get home as much as possible," recalled Anderson. "That first New York winter was really hard. I had no winter coats and was out here in long sleeves and hoodies just trying to make it to class. It was tough, but I eventually adjusted with the help of my teammates. Playing on a team you are kind of given a family when you first go away from home so that honestly was a factor that kept me stable."

And as far as motivation for Anderson, that comes from his friends and former high school teammates.

"Honestly, just knowing that I have so many friends and people that I played with in high school that worked so hard and motivated me to get where I am today," said Anderson. "Knowing the fact they would love to be in my shoes is really something I think about. It is kind of an unsaid thing. I know that they would love to have this opportunity and I feel like I owe it to them so I know that I have to work hard and go out there and make plays."
