STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Patience can be a virtue and in the case of Stony Brook football redshirt sophomore WR
Delante Hellams Jr. (Washington, D.C./Dematha Catholic), having patience has reaped reward.
Hellams, in his third season on Long Island, has pulled down 12 catches for 301 yards through the first 10 games oF 2019, including a touchdown that came against Richmond. That score was his first of his career and lifted the proverbial monkey off his back.
"When I first crossed the goal line it just felt like 'Ah' it was nice to get that first one out of the way," Hellams said.
Hellams has also pulled down some other big catches this season, including four receptions of 40-yards or more and is averaging 25.3 yards per catch on the year.
Those number are coming after Hellams waiting in the wings for his turn to shine, including taking a redshirt in 2017 and recording just three catches for a total of 52 yards in 2018.
During his time being patient on the sideline, Hellams took advantage of the opportunity to learn the ropes of being a receiver at the college level.
"My redshirt year I had a chance to watch Ray Bolden and Harrison Jackson and they just showed me the ropes, pretty much," Hellams remembered. "They showed me how to practice and how to prepare."
Hellams did prepare well under the tutelage of both Bolden and Jackson and has emerged as a top target for Seawolves QB
Tyquell Fields for both the remainder and into the future.
That thought pleases Hellams who is driven to success by his family, including his younger brother who is defensive back at the University of Alabama.
"I have kind of a big family so they just push me every single day," Hellams said. "Also, my little brother. He is at Alabama and I'm here at Stony Brook so I just want to be able to show him how to do things so he can just keep improving."
