STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's basketball team held a special press conference on Wednesday morning to officially sign Amelia Garcia of Centereach, New York, to its program for the upcoming school year.
"We're really excited for this day," said head coach
Caroline McCombs. "It's a special day for us as we want to welcome Amelia into our Seawolves family. She's a young lady that we've been recruiting for a long time and she embodies all the characteristics that our young ladies do in being Seawolves."
Garcia, who is currently battling type 1 diabetes, was paired with Stony Brook through Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams, forming life-long bonds and life-changing outcomes.
"When I found out that we had been matched with a die-hard Seawolves women's basketball fan, we became so excited to welcome Amelia into our family," said redshirt sophomore forward
Oksana Gouchie-Provencher. "On behalf of the team, we are so happy for her to be a part of the team and cherish these memories and become a part of our journey."
Accompanied by her parents, Anthony and Amy, as well as family and friends, Garcia signed her national letter of intent and was presented with an official team jersey and shirt.
