Three Score in Double Figures as Women’s Hoops Tops Elon on Sunday Afternoon

ELON, N.C. – The Stony Brook women's basketball team (11-7, 5-2 CAA) earned a 70-56 victory over Elon on Sunday afternoon inside the Schar Center at Elon University. Stony Brook was paced by a trio of student-athletes who scored in double figures en route to its first-ever win over the Phoenix.

The Seawolves wasted no time to make their presence felt in North Carolina, as they jumped out to a 14-2 lead at the 6:45 mark in the first quarter. Leading the way was senior guard Gigi Gonzalez, who knocked down her first four shots from the field for nine of Stony Brook's first 14 points.

After graduate guard Anastasia Warren converted back-to-back three pointers to give the Seawolves a 23-6 lead, the Stony Brook defense did not allow a bucket for the final 4:04 of the frame. The Seawolves limited Elon to just 15.8 percent shooting field from the field in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Elon found their rhythm on the offensive end and tallied 16 points in the frame. Gonzalez and graduate guard Daishai Almond paced the Seawolves in the second as each had a team-best five points in the quarter. The backcourt duo led the team to 17 points in the quarter as they took a commanding 40-22 lead into the break.

Elon did not go away without a fight, as it outscored Stony Brook 22-8 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to four heading into the fourth.

The Seawolves and Phoenix traded blows down the stretch. Elon was able to get within two points of the lead four times over the final 10 minutes of the game, but Stony Brook came up with an answer on each occasion.

Stony Brook's starters scored 20 of the final 22 points, including Warren and junior guard Shamarla King tallying six points each. After Elon cut Stony Brook's lead to 52-50 with 7:15 to play, the Seawolves stormed past the Phoenix as they went on an 18-6 run to ultimately take the victory, 70-56. The Seawolves were a blazing 8-of-11 from the field (72.7%), while holding Elon to just 5-of-15 (33.3%) in the final quarter.
