STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's basketball team (14-9, 8-4 CAA) returned to Island Federal Arena this afternoon and celebrated the Play4Kay - Kay Yow Cancer Fund game with a 70-60 victory over Hofstra University (9-14, 3-9 CAA). This victory gave the Seawolves a season sweep in the Battle of Long Island and they have now won their last six matchups against the Pride.
For just the second time this season, Stony Brook was led by five student-athletes who scored in double figures and tallied 68 of the 70 points for the Seawolves. Leading the way for the squad was graduate guard
Anastasia Warren who scored a team-best 19 points, 14 coming in the first half.
After Stony Brook fell behind, 22-14, at the beginning of the second quarter, their largest deficit, the squad sparked a 17-3 spurt that was capped off by Warren cashing in on a three-pointer, forcing a Hofstra timeout with 2:10 remaining in the half. The Georgia native knocked down three of her five total three-pointers from deep during this spurt.
Senior
Gigi Gonzalez would score four more points at the end of the half to give the Seawolves a 35-29 advantage. In the first 20 minutes of play, Stony Brook dominated the glass by out-rebounding Hofstra 18-12, including 8-3 on the offensive end that led to 11 second-chance points for the Seawolves.
Stony Brook was in control for most of the game and since it trailed, 22-14, in the second quarter, it outscored the Pride, 37-20, over the next period and a half to give themselves a 55-42 lead with one quarter remaining. The squad got contributions from all five starters, as each student-athlete recorded multiple points in the frame.
The Seawolves jumped out to their biggest lead, 62-49, with 7:18 remaining after graduate guard
Daishai Almond captured back-to-back buckets from a driving layup and a forced turnover that led to another layup. Following a run by Hofstra that cut the deficit to two points with 2:49 left, Stony Brook held the Pride scoreless for the remainder of the game as the squad went on an 8-0 run to secure the victory in the Battle of Long Island.
