STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's basketball team (17-10, 11-5 CAA) was narrowly edged in its home regular season finale this afternoon at Island Federal Arena against Delaware (15-12, 8-8 CAA), 53-31.
Before the game, Stony Brook honored graduates
Anastasia Warren,
Daishai Almond, and seniors
Gigi Gonzalez and
Nairimar Vargas-Reyes with a special senior day ceremony. The four student-athletes have all made lasting impacts on the Stony Brook women's basketball program during their time on Long Island.
The Seawolves were paced by three student athletes who tallied double figures. Sophomore forward
Sherese Pittman, Almond, and junior guard
Shamarla King finished the game with 35 of the 51 points for Stony Brook.
After falling behind 29-22 at the break, the Seawolves came out firing in the second half with Warren knocking down back-to-back three pointers and then a jump shot to make it a 38-34 game with 4:11 in the third quarter.
The Blue Hens kept the pressure on the Seawolves in the fourth quarter by holding the squad to just three points in the quarter for the first 6:20. Trailing 48-39 with 3:40 left, Stony Brook did not bend and went on an 8-2 spurt over the next 2:50 to make it a 50-48 game with 57 seconds left remaining.
Leading the run was King capturing two buckets on layups, Almond making a bucket, and Gonzalez forcing a turnover and then finishing at the basket for the and-one finish. But a layup by Delaware with 30 seconds left gave the Blue Hens a 52-48 lead and ultimately the road victory.
