OPENING KICK
- Stony Brook will look to bounce back from a season-opening defeat and will play its first road game of the year, taking on No. 22 Rhode Island on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. from Meade Stadium in Kingston, R.I.
- Stony Brook fell to No. 22 Delaware 37-13 at LaValle Stadium in Week 1. The Seawolves fell behind early, eventually going down 24-3 in the third quarter. A third-quarter rally cut the deficit to 24-13, but Delaware finished with the final 13 points of the game.
- No. 22 Rhode Island marks the second of three ranked opponents currently on the schedule according to the Stats Perform FCS Poll. Stony Brook faced now-No. 19 Delaware earlier in the season and has a future date with No. 11 New Hampshire. (Oct. 21).
- Stony Brook plays its second of three straight night games, with next week's game at Arkansas State scheduled for 6 p.m. CT/7 p.m. ET.
- The Seawolves will look to snap their seven-game losing streak and pick up their first road win since Nov. 6, 2021 at Maine.
NEW OFFENSE IN ACTION
- Quarterback Casey Case made his Stony Brook debut last week, throwing for 163 on 14-of-40 passes and three interceptions.
- He was named QB1 by Head Coach Chuck Priore at CAA Football Media Day on July 25.
- The ground game got going, as Stony Brook rushers totaled 164 yards on the ground, its sixth straight game with at least 100 rushing yards dating back to last season.
- SBU's 164 rushing yards to open 2023 were more than all but one game in 2022.
- New offensive coordinator Andrew Dresner led the SBU offense for the first time.
STONY BROOK AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
- Stony Brook is 11-34 all-time against FCS-ranked opponents.
- The Seawolves' last ranked win came in 2021 against then-No. 14 Delaware on Oct. 16, 2021.
- SBU's last ranked win on the road was a 36-35 triumph at No. 5 Villanova on Oct. 26, 2019 when the Seawolves erased a 15-point deficit in the final 4:45, winning on a last-second field goal by Nick Courtney.
- Stony Brook won two ranked games each in 2017 and 2018, when it last went to the playoffs. The Seawolves defeated No. 13 Villanova (Week 5) and No. 11 Delaware (Week 10) in 2018 and No. 12 New Hampshire (Week 7) and No. 17 Richmond (Week 9) the year prior.
- Stony Brook's highest-ever ranked win was against No. 2 Richmond at LaValle Stadium on Sept. 17, 2016.
DEFENSE CREATES PLAYS
- Stony Brook had four takeaways against Delaware in Week 1 – three interceptions and a fumble recovery.
- The Seawolves' three interceptions and four sacks were each tied for the most in the CAA in Week 1.
- The four total takeaways were Stony Brook's most since Oct. 23, 2021 and the three interceptions marked SBU's first time with three picks in a game since Sept. 15, 2018.
- Redshirt junior Nick Chimienti had two picks, SBU's first individual multi-interception game since Randy Pringle on October 23, 2021 and the 17th such instance in program history.
- The other two takeaways were career-firsts, as redshirt junior Noah Rodriguez recorded his first career interception at Stony Brook and redshirt freshman Anthony Ferrelli scooped his first ever fumble.
YOUNG WIDE RECEIVERS KEY FOR OFFENSE
- A pair of redshirt freshmen in Jayce Freeman and Anthony Johnson made key contributions in the receiving game in Week 1, combining for seven receptions and 93 yards.
- Freeman finished as Stony Brook's leading receiver against the Blue Hens, while Johnson set up SBU's only touchdown with a 19-yard reception down to the one-yard line.
