STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 14-3 win over the Fordham Rams on Wednesday at Joe Nathan Field to extend their winning streak to three games.
Ty Panariello (1-0) picked up his first career victory after his performance out of the bullpen for Stony Brook (12-12). The right-hander went two shutout innings while giving up one hit. Jerek Hobb also made an impact on the mound for the Seawolves, throwing two shutout innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
Offensively, the Seawolves tallied their third straight double-figure hit game by finishing with 10 hits as a group. Leading the way was Matt Brown-Eiring tallying three hits and scoring three runs, while Brett Paulsen finished with two hits and two RBI. Also, Erik Paulsen mashed his team-high third homer of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After senior Quinlan Montgomery sat down the Rams in order to begin the game, the Seawolves would get on the board immediately after by scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. Stony Brook got an RBI single from B. Paulsen, scoring Brown-Eiring from second base who began the rally with a double down the third base line.
The Rams failed to push any runs across before the Seawolves offense got back to their scoring ways in the next inning.
Cam Santerre came across to score the lone run of the inning for Stony Brook, which brought the Seawolves lead to 2-0.
Panariello sat down six of the seven Rams that he faced in the third and fourth inning, while Hobb kept the Rams scoreless in the fifth. In their turn at the plate, the Seawolves added to their lead with
Ryan Micheli scoring on a wild-pitch, bringing the score to 3-0 in the fifth.
The Rams fought back, closing the gap to 3-1 until Stony Brook added some insurance in the seventh. The Seawolves notched two runs, including one on a solo round-tripper off the bat of E. Paulsen, bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of Stony Brook.
Ty Stout held Fordham scoreless in the next inning before the squad expanded their lead to 14-1 in the bottom half. The Stony Brook offense piled up nine runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Cal Parrillo, and RBI hit by pitches from Santerre, Matthew Wright, Joseph Delanzo. Fordham put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Seawolves still coasted to the 14-3 win.
