Five Baseball Student-Athletes Capture CSC Academic All-District Honors

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook baseball team was recognized for their excellence in the classroom as five student-athletes were selected by the College Sports Communicators for the 2023-24 Academic All-District Team.
 
Graduate students Cam Santerre and Ty Saunders joined the junior duo of JT Raab and Colton Book and sophomore Johnny Pill to earn the honor for the first time in their careers.

The Academic All-District Baseball Team awards the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. In order to qualify, student-athletes must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA and be an important starter or reserve, meeting minimum playing time requirements. The maximum number of nominees per school is five.

In his first season on the Island, Santerre appeared in 41 games and made 38 starts for the Seawolves. The outfielder accumulated 34 hits, 21 hit-by-pitches, 17 walks, 16 RBI, seven doubles, home run, and registered a .288 batting average during his rookie campaign. He finished top-five on the team in numerous offensive categories such as leading in stolen bases, runs scored, and hit-by-pitches, as well as third in batting average and slugging percentage (.407). The Rhode Island native earned his MBA in Marketing and completed the 2023-24 academic calendar year with a 3.89 GPA. 

Washington native Ty Saunders appeared in a team-high 17 games on the bump in his first season with Stony Brook. The right-hander made eight starts and nine appearances out of the bullpen. Saunders went 2-5 with 39 strikeouts and 1.55 WHIP over 51.0 innings on the hill. He earned his first career win with the Seawolves on March 16 after he tossed 4.0 scoreless innings at Seton Hall. The pitcher had a 3.84 GPA during the 2023-24 academic calendar year and graduated with his MBA in Marketing. 

Raab had a standout year for the Seawolves after he set career-marks on the bump in wins (4), starts (11), complete games (1), innings pitched (71.1), strikeouts (52), .ERA (4.54) and opposing batting average (.252). The Long Island native led the team in innings pitched, second in appearances (15), strikeouts and wins, and third in .ERA and opposing batting average. On April 21, he became the first and only pitcher on the Seawolves staff to toss a complete game after he allowed two runs and struck out seven batters at Towson. Raab had a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring and owns a 3.98 GPA for his career. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. 

After not appearing during his sophomore year, Book came back during his junior campaign and went 1-2 with 28 strikeouts over 25.2 innings in 11 appearances. Book made his presence felt early in the year by earning his first victory of the season on March 8 vs Siena after tossing a scoreless inning in the win. The native of Pennsylvania also tossed two scoreless innings at William & Mary on March 24 and another 1.1 scoreless innings at Army on April 9. Book currently owns a 3.58 GPA and is pursuing his Bachelor of Science in Business. 

The native of New Jersey, Pilla burst onto the scene during his sophomore campaign on the Island. The infielder appeared in 45 games for the Seawolves, making 41 starts at second base. The lefty set new career-marks in hits (45), runs scored (33), walks (17), RBI (17), doubles (12), stolen bases (11), home runs (3), batting average (.273), slugging percentage (.400), and on-base percentage (.351). He also had the longest on-base streak this season (25 games) and ranked fourth on the team in multi-hit games (11). Pilla had a 3.67 GPA in the spring and owns a 3.62 GPA for his career. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management.

About the CSC Academic All-District Award
The 2024 Academic All-District® Baseball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA. 

Academic All-District® honorees were considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. Student-athletes selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists are denoted with an asterisk and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced July 2, 2024.
