STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Stony Brook came up just short against Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. The result ensured that there would be a rematch between the Long Island programs, setting up a CAA Quarterfinal bout between No. 2 Stony Brook and No. 3 Hofstra on Thursday, October 30 at 6 pm at LaValle Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hofstra opened the scoring when Millie Davies scored directly off of a free kick in the 20th minute. The Pride quickly went up 2-0 on a goal from Mathilde Braithwaite in the 34th minute. The Seawolves trailed by two goals as the contest entered the half, but Stony Brook's resiliency showed over the final 45 minutes.
Hannah Maracina helped close the gap, cutting the deficit in half with a tap-in goal on a cross from Hedvig Helling. Reilly Rich added an assist on the goal as well.
The Seawolves fought all the way back to knot things up at 2-2 with a 73rd-minute goal from Helling, her first of the season. Rich made an incredible play, evading a defender shielding her from the ball and saving it from going out of bounds before playing it up to Helling who buried the equalizer in a one-on-one opportunity against the keeper.
Hofstra broke the tie and took a 3-2 lead on Olivia Pearse's goal in the 79th minute, a shot that came down off the crossbar and into the back of the net. Stony Brook had multiple late scoring chances, but could not come up with another equalizer.
STATS AND NOTES
- Stony Brook erased a two-goal deficit in a span of 8:22 with goals from Maracina and Helling.
- Maracina netted the Seawolves' first goal of the match, her fifth of the season. She ends the regular season with the third-most goals and points (13) on the team.
- Helling played a part in both goals, assisting on the first and scoring the second. Her eight assists this season are tied for the most in the conference and the goal was her first of the season.
- Rich tallied an assist on both goals, increasing her CAA-leading point total to 32. Her 32 points this season are tied for the seventh-most (Kerri McCabe, 2000) in a single season in program history. Rich's 35 career goals and 88 career points stand as fourth-most in program history, while her 17 assists are tied for seventh-most in Stony Brook history.
- Jona Hennings collected seven saves for the Seawolves out of 20 total Pride shots.
- Stony Brook saw a streak of eight straight wins at home over conference opponents 13 straight results at LaValle Stadium against CAA competition that dated back to September 2023 snapped.
- The Seawolves have now qualified for the CAA postseason in all four seasons as a member since joining the league in 2022.
