HAMILTON, N.Y. — Stony Brook women's soccer secured a 2-1 road victory over Colgate on Sunday afternoon.
Kristina Garcia started the scoring and it was
Leah Rifas who scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute of the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook's offense tested Colgate's keeper early with a pair of shots, forcing a save on the first attempt of the afternoon. In the 20th minute, Garcia corralled a misplayed ball behind the defense, sneaking it past the keeper to open the scoring.
The Raiders ensuing attempt at an equalizer was turned away by Jona Hennings. Defensively, the Seawolves allowed just one more shot over the final 15 minutes of action, taking the 1-0 advantage into the half.
Hennings made back-to-back stops in the opening minutes of the second half, holding the lead for Stony Brook. Reilly Rich, Eva Sprewell and Garcia all saw shots turned away in a 13-minute span, as the Seawolves searched for an insurance marker.
It was Colgate who found twine next, leveling the match at 1-1 with a 66th minute tally. Stony Brook continued forward though, and its perseverance paid off when Rifas netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 85th minute. Sammy Hannwacker sent a ball towards goal that Colgate's keeper couldn't control; Rifas, charging towards net, blasted the rebound opportunity into the back of the net to put the Seawolves ahead late.
Hennings made one final stop in the 87th minute, securing Stony Brook's fourth consecutive victory.
