STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook got a hat trick from Reilly Rich in a 5-3 win over Yale on Thursday evening at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook constructed a 4-0 lead and held off Yale's late surge to earn its fifth win over the last six contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead when Rich notched her first goal of the night in the 24th minute, assisted by Emanuelly Ferreira and Hannah Maracina. The Seawolves increased their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Sammy Hannwacker, a long-range strike, three minutes later.
Stony Brook extended its lead to 3-0 on Ferreira's 40th-minute goal, her first of the season. Leah Sparacio and Hedvig Helling earned the assist on the goal. Stony Brook carried the three-goal advantage into the intermission.
The Seawolves ahead 4-0 with another goal from Rich, her second of the evening. Rich, like Hannwacker earlier, scored from distance after some nifty footwork in the midfield.
Yale closed the gap on Stony Brook to make it a 4-1 game on Vienna Lundstedt's penalty-kick goal in the 69th minute. Lundstedt was taken down in the box and converted to get the Bulldogs on the board. The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit in half thanks again to Lundstedt, who scored on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
The Seawolves padded their lead to three goals again when Rich completed the hat trick, squeezing a shot just inside the post. Yale added a late goal, but Stony Brook's defense locked things down late and secured the victory over the Ivy League foe.
