STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's soccer team battled Army to a 0-0 draw on Tuesday evening at LaValle Stadium. Goalkeeper
Rushon Sandy recorded three saves en route to his second clean sheet of the season, helping the Seawolves secure the draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams traded chances in the early stages of the match. Less than nine minutes in,
Finlay Oliver tested Army keeper Michael Giury with a shot on frame. Just minutes later,
Alex Fleury's free kick narrowly missed the left post following an Army foul outside the box. The Seawolves continued to pressure in the final third. At the 17-minute mark,
Scemar Webb found Fleury on a corner, but the shot was blocked by the Army defense.
Kristoffer Aarflot followed with an attempt that was again turned away by Giury.
In the 21st minute, Stony Brook earned another free kick opportunity after an Army yellow card, but the delivery into the box was cleared before reaching goal. Moments later,
Ryan Farr nearly opened the scoring with an acrobatic bicycle kick that struck the post. Stony Brook continued to push forward, with
Jamie Orson getting a header on goal in the 31st minute and Oliver seeing another close-range chance blocked just minutes later. Army's best look of the half came in the 39th minute, but a goal was waved off for offside after video review.
The Seawolves came out strong again to open the second half. In the 55th minute, Farr broke past the keeper but saw his shot cleared off the line by an Army defender. On the ensuing play, Oliver's header rattled the crossbar, keeping the score level. Army's first shot of the second half came at the 60-minute mark — their first attempt in over 35 minutes. The Seawolves continued to threaten, with
Finlay Oliver seeing another shot saved in the 66th minute.
Sandy came up with a key save in the 75th minute, and Aarflot had a chance moments later, but his shot was blocked near the top of the box. Army nearly broke through in the 78th minute, hitting the crossbar on a close-range opportunity. Stony Brook thought they had a goal in the 79th minute, but an offside call wiped away the effort following a corner kick. The Seawolves earned one final look in the 86th minute, but the shot went wide. Sandy made one last save in the 88th to preserve the shutout.
