Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Vermont's Kelly Herrero scored both goals for the Catamounts as Stony Brook dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Vermont (4-5-1 overall, 3-1 America East) got things going in the 37th minute when Kelly McHugh's cross found Herrero streaking down the right side. Herrero's shot to the far post eased past SBU goalkeeper Lori Nelson to give the Catamounts the 1-0 lead at the half.
But the Seawolves (0-7-2 overall, 0-4-1 America East) appeared to be a different team in the second stanza, as Stony Brook started attacking much more aggressively. After recording just four shots in the first half, SBU got off 14 in the second and forced UVM keeper Brooke Fairbanks to make several solid saves.
Stony Brook's pressure paid off just over seven minutes into the second half, when Beth Arikian set up for a free kick 28 yards out. Arikian lobbed the ball perfectly and Fairbanks dove to get a hand on it, but the ball slipped into the right corner to even the game at 1-1. The Seawolves continued to control the tempo, but the score remained tied at the end of regulation.
Vermont's Herrero struck again with 3:50 remaining in the first extra period. Nikkie Hessney raced down the right side and found Herrero 15 yards out in the center of the box, and Herrero settled the ball before firing it past Nelson for the gamewinner.
Stony Brook outshot the Catamounts 20-10, but Vermont's Fairbanks made 10 saves while Nelson recorded four.
The Seawolves hope to rebound on Monday when they travel to face Army in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
