Stony Brook, N.Y. -
John Moschella made 10 saves and Chris Megaloudis netted the game-winner with just under 10 minutes to play as the Stony Brook men's soccer team edged Boston University 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 8-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in America East play, while the Terriers picked up their first conference loss of the season to fall to 4-5-1 and 2-1-1.
The Seawolves, who have already doubled their win total from a year ago, are now 5-1-1 in their last seven outings.
Just over 11 minutes into the contest, a Stony Brook player sent the ball into the corner, forcing Boston University goalkeeper Chad Comroe to come out of the net and attempt to get the ball near the edge of the penalty area. Comroe dove on the ball and in an effort to keep from sliding out of the box for a hand ball foul, lost control of the ball. Anthony Barberio pounced on it, dribbled back towards the goal and fired a shot into the empty net to give SB the 1-0 advantage.
The Terriers pressured the Seawolves in the second half but Moschella turned several Terrier shots aside to keep the game scoreless, including when John Cooper fired a shot from the left side about 20 yards out, but Moschella dove to his left and tipped the ball just past the far post.
The Terriers finally broke through in the 77th minute off an indirect kick. Cooper served a bending cross from 30 yards out that Erik Evjen headed home to knot the game at 1-1.
Stony Brook took the lead for good less than four minutes later. Zach Norwood's corner kick sailed to the back side of the goal and onto the head of Mark Zajkowski. Zajkowski headed it back across the face of the goal and Chris Megaloudis headed it past Comroe for the game-winner.
Moschella (6-2-1) was the story in net, facing 18 shots while posting 10 saves to earn his sixth win of the season.
The Seawolves are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on N.C. State at 2:00 p.m.
