Today's Matchup
The Seawolves (3-15, 2-7), fresh off their first win in eight tries, play host to UMBC (1-17, 1-8), which is coming off a 75-58 loss to Albany.
The Seawolves won the only meeting between the two teams earlier this season, edging the Retrievers 53-49 in Baltimore.
Scouting the Retrievers
UMBC has struggled all season, winning its first game of the year on Jan. 31 with a 65-55 upset win over Vermont.
The Retrievers are led by Anastasia Goncharova, who is averaging 10.7 points per game, while freshman Courtney Doughman is averaging 18.5 points in UMBC's last two outings.
Last Time Out
Kelly Watson scored a career-high 24 points to lead Stony Brook to a 79-70 win over Northeastern. The win snapped the Seawolves' seven game losing streak and eight game home losing streak dating back to last season. Watson, along with fellow freshmen Mykeema Ford, Jessica Smith and Inbar Orion, combined for 61 of SB's 79 points. Watson shot 8-for-10 from the field and hit 4-for-4 three-pointers and free throws. Ford finished with 18 points, while Smith netted in 11 and Orion added eight.
That's Elementary, My Dear Watson...
Kelly Watson had her best performance of the season in the Seawolves last outing vs. Northeastern.
Watson dropped a game-high 24 points on the Huskies, which more than doubled her previous career-best of 10 points. The freshman shot 8-for-10 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range and the free throw line. Watson also chipped in five assists, which tied her career-high.
Fab Freshmen
Stony Brook's four freshmen - Mykeema Ford, Inbar Orion, Jessica Smith and Kelly Watson - have been a big part of the Seawolves lineup this season. The group, led by Watson's career-high 24 points, was a huge factor in SB's win over Northeastern on Feb. 4, as they combined for 61 of the Seawolves 79 points. Ford collected 18 points, while Smith chipped in 11 and Orion, who played just nine minutes, netted eight.
Ford Earns Second Rookie of the Week Award
Mykeema Ford was named the America East Rookie of the Week for the week ending Feb. 1. It marked the second time this season the freshman earned the award.
Ford put together an outstanding week, averaging 25.0 ppg while burying 11 three pointers in SB's two outings. Ford had a career night in the Seawolves near upset of BU, finishing with 31 points on 9-of-15 (.600) shooting from the floor, including 7-of-9 (.778) three-pointers. The seven three's set a new Stony Brook record and tied her for the third best single-game performance in America East history. Ford's 31 points tied her for the seventh best outing in school history. Against Maine she once again led the way with a team-high 19 points to go with three assists.
Smith, Ford Among Top America East Freshmen
Jessica Smith and Mykeema Ford are not only two of SB's top players, but two of the top rookies in the America East so far this season.
Entering today's contest, Smith ranks first among first-year players in rebounding (8.7 rpg), offensive rebounds (3.72 pg) and defensive rebounds (4.94 pg) and third in scoring (10.6 ppg). Ford stands first among rookies in both scoring (12.8 ppg) and second in three point field goals per game (1.72 pg).
Paw Prints
Sherry Jordan ranks 11th in the nation with 3.5 steals per game (as of Feb. 2) . . . Mykeema Ford is averaging 22.7 points in her last three games and 19.6 in the last five. The freshman has scored in double-figures in nine of SB's last 12 games, including four games with 20 or more points and one over 30 . . . Sherry Jordan scored her 1,400th career point and moved into fourth place all-time at Stony Brook with 723 career boards vs. Binghamton on Jan. 24 . . . Kelly Watson returned to the lineup vs. Albany on Jan. 21 after a four-game absence. The Seawolves had been without the services of the point guard since she left with a knee injury three minutes into the Harvard game back on Jan. 3 . . . Jessica Smith is the only player to start in each of SB's 18 games this season . . . Smith, along with Mykeema Ford and Theresa LoParrino, is one of just three players to play in all 18 contests.
Seawolves in The America East
Five Seawolves are among the America East leaders in games played through Feb. 4.
Sherry Jordan ranks first in the conference with 3.43 steals, fifth with 8.6 rebounds, third with 5.86 defensive rebounds, fifth with 0.93 blocks and 2.71 offensive rebounds and 14th with 10.9 points and 15th with 2.36 assists. Jessica Smith ranks first in the league with 3.72 offensive rebounds, tied for third with 8.7 rebounds and tied for seventh with 4.94 defensive rebounds. Bojana Bogetic is fourth with 0.93 blocks and 14th with 1.87 offensive rebounds. Mykeema Ford is tied for seventh with 1.72 three point field goals and 10th with 12.8 points per outing, while Kelly Watson is 14th with 2.5 assists per game.
Notable
Stony Brook shot 50 percent from the field vs. Northeastern, the first time it shot 50 percent or better since its win over IPFW back on Nov. 29 . . . The Seawolves were outscored 251-211 in the second half during their seven-game losing streak. During the skid, SB shot just .360 (144-400), while its opponents shot .435 (167-384) . . . with their loss to New Hampshire on Jan. 10, the Seawolves failed to win consecutive games since defeating UNH and Northeastern last season on Feb. 2 and 5, respectively.
Built Ford Tough
Mykeema Ford had a record-setting performance vs. Boston University Jan. 28. The guard hit 7-of-9 three-pointers, setting a new Stony Brook record while tying for third all-time in the America East for three's in a game. With her career-high 31 points, Ford also tied for the seventh-best single-game performance in school history.
That's the Sherry We Know
Sherry Jordan, who has struggled most of the season, put together a solid all-around game vs. Boston University on Jan. 28.
Jordan shot a season-best 63.6 percent (7-11) to finish with 18 points. The senior added a game-high 11 rebounds and three steals, three assists and two blocks.
Jordan currently leads the America East in steals (3.43 spg) and is fifth in rebounding (8.6 rpg).
Hard Time at Home
Until their win over Northeastern on Feb. 4, Stony Brook struggled at home, losing their first seven outings at the Sports Complex.
In those seven losses, the Seawolves shot just .348 (145-of-417) from the field and .579 (73-of-126) from the free throw line, while their opponents shot .414 (152-of-367) from the floor and .724 (105-of-145) from the charity stripe. Opponents outscored SB by a 447-381 margin in those games.
The Seawolves seven straight home losses to open the season marks the worst streak in school history. The previous worst start came in 1998-99 and 1995-96 as both teams started 1-4.
Breaking the Shooting Slump
In its outing vs. Boston University on Jan. 28, Stony Brook shot a solid 44.7 percent (21-47), marking just the second time in eight games the Seawolves shot over 40 percent in a game.
SB struggled from the field entering the contest, managing 38.5 percent (378-983) shooting for the season.
T-Lo Moving Up
Senior Theresa LoParrino continues to move up on Stony Brook's all-time record book in several categories.
The guard stands in sixth place all-time with 244 free throws, 10 away from fifth place (Lisa White, 254). LoParrino also moved into ninth with 165 assists and third with a .770 (244-of-317) free throw percentage.
LoParrino ranks in several other categories, including three point field goals (second, 100) and free throw attempts (eighth, 317).
Oh, Sherry
Senior Sherry Jordan is looking to make her final season at Stony Brook a memorable one.
A two-time all-conference pick and a preseason all-league selection, Jordan has scored in double-figures in 75 of the 89 games she has played in, including 27 games with 20 or more points and four with 30 or more.
Jordan currently has 1,436 career points, good for fourth all-time at Stony Brook. She needs just 92 points to pass Katie Browngardt (1,527 points, 1988-91) on the list for second place all-time. Michele White (1983-87) is the Seawolves' leader with 2,183 career points.
The forward stands fourth all-time at SB with 746 boards, 241 steals and 527 field goals and sixth with 209 assists.
Milestones Approaching
Several Seawolves are approaching milestones during the 2003-04 season.
Against Binghamton on Jan. 24, Sherry Jordan scored her 1,400th point while Danielle DeGiorgio pulled down her 400th rebound and Theresa LoParrino drained her 100th three point field goal.
