The Stony Brook University women's soccer team erupted for five goals in the first half and cruised past Wagner, 7-0, Sunday afternoon in non-conference action in Staten Island, N.Y.
Seven different Seawolves scored on the afternoon to pace Stony Brook's highest offensive output since a 7-2 victory over Columbia on October 11, 1994.
With the win, the Seawolves improve to 3-1 on the season. It is Stony Brook's best start since 2000 when the Seawolves opened up the season with a 3-0-1 record.
Freshman Kelly Grant tallied the first goal of the game and the first in her collegiate career when she ripped a shot from 35 yards out to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead at the 13:40 mark. Stony Brook wasted no time pouring in four more goals in the first half as Kate Collins headed in a Trine Allenberg corner kick just over 40 seconds later to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead. Goals from Brooke Barbuto (36:40), Tiffany Fasullo (37:53), and Alexandra Teti (41:04) rounded out the first half scoring, with all three goals being scored in just under a five minute span.
Megan Murray and Aria Tanzi each scored their first goals in a Stony Brook uniform in the second half to conclude the scoring. Stony Brook outshot Wagner, 20-9, in the game.
Freshman Marisa Viola recorded her first collegiate shutout while recording five saves in the victory for the Seawolves.
The Seawolves return to action when they host Towson at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night in the Holiday Inn Express Invitational held at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
