Box Score
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Cait Frank's goal with 3:47 remaining lifted Stony Brook to a dramatic 2-1 win over Towson on Friday night in the first round of the Holiday Inn Express Invitational at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Frank's first collegiate goal helped Stony Brook improve to 4-1 while Towson slipped to 2-1-1. The Seawolves are off to their best start since 1998 when they won seven of their first eight games.
With the score tied late in the game, Tiffany Fasullo's corner kick went to the far side of the penalty area where Kristin Mishrell patiently waited on a bounce and fired a shot back across the box where Frank reached with her left leg and sharply deflected the ball past Towson's Brandi Daniels for the game-winning goal.
Towson, who entered the game undefeated and had tied nationally-ranked Maryland earlier this season, had a terrific chance to tie when Stony Brook was whistled for a hand ball in the penalty area with 2:44 remaining in the contest. Rosie Goldberg's penalty kick sailed high over the crossbar and Stony Brook held on for the win.
Stony Brook broke a scoreless tie in the first half when Brittany Benthin settled a loose ball and found the lower left hand corner of the net from 18 yards out. Fasullo nearly put the Seawolves up 2-0 near the end of the first half but her deflection inched just wide of the right post.
Towson got even in the 60th minute as Marissa Gross streaked in on goal and pushed the ball past Stony Brook keeper Marisa Viola and off the right post to knot the game at 1. Viola earned her fourth win of the season, stopping eight Tiger shots while Daniels made five saves in the loss.
Stony Brook is back in action on Sunday when it takes on Providence in the final match of the Holiday Inn Express Tournament. Kick-off is 2:30 p.m.
In earlier action, Providence posted a 2-0 win over Lafayette. Ashley Amaral and Jill Camburn tallied for the Friars in the win. Towson will take on Lafayette on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
