Baltimore, Md. -
Freshman Holly Razzaghi (Bloomsburg, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute to lead the Stony Brook University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the UMBC Retrievers on Sunday afternoon at UMBC Soccer Stadium. Stony Brook improves to 7-6-0 overall and 3-1 in the America East while UMBC falls to 2-13-0 and 1-4.
UMBC took the lead just 6:46 into the game as Morgan Warrington headed a Danielle Kell cross just out of the reach of Stony Brook junior goalkeeper Amanda Hemme (East Norwich, N.Y.) to give the Retrievers a 1-0 advantage. But the Seawolves responded in the 26th minute as senior Trine Allenberg (Roberts, Wisc.) sent a corner kick into senior Brooke Barbuto (Syracuse, N.Y.) who brought the ball down and put it past UMBC keeper Christine Bacinski for her third goal of the season.
The teams went into the half tied despite Stony Brook holding an 11-5 advantage in shots. Hemme made three saves in the opening period for the Seawolves who also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Stony Brook broke the tie just over 12 minutes into the second half as Razzaghi knocked in the rebound off a shot from sophomore Sarah Dwyer (Laurel, Md.) for her first career goal. Hemme and the Seawolves defense, led by freshman Alexis Lindo (York, Pa.), took control from there as the Retrievers had just three shots over the final 35 minutes of the contest.
Hemme finished with four saves to notch her second consecutive victory in net for SBU. Bacinski made six stops in goal for the Retrievers who were outshot 16-9 by the Seawolves.
Stony Brook returns to action on Thursday, traveling to take on Albany. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
