Durham, N.H. -
Freshman Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.) scored two goals but it wasn't enough as the Stony Brook women's soccer team fell to defending America East regular season champion New Hampshire, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon at Lewis Fields . Stony Brook falls to 5-6-0 overall and 1-1 in the America East with the loss while New Hampshire improves to 3-7-1 and 2-0.
The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute as senior Brooke Barbuto (Syracuse, N.Y.) slotted a pass through the UNH defense to McKenna who blasted a shot just past New Hampshire keeper Nikki Golding from the top of the 18-yard box. Stony Brook held the lead until the 41st minute when Michelle Sheehan scored off a give-and-go with Sarah Hourihan to tie the game.
Sheehan struck again just 21 seconds before halftime, gathering a loose ball off a corner kick and putting it past Stony Brook junior goalkeeper Amanda Hemme (East Norwich, N.Y.) from 20 yards out to give UNH a 2-1 advantage. SBU outshot New Hampshire 8-4 in the opening period.
Caitlin Whelan pushed the New Hampshire lead to 3-1 just over seven minutes into the second half, driving a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the upper left corner of the net. McKenna tallied her second goal of the day in the 79th minute, beating two UNH defenders down the left sideline before chipping it past an oncoming Golding to draw the Seawolves to within one at 3-2.
But the Seawolves could not come up with the equalizer in the closing minutes as New Hampshire escaped with the one-goal victory. Stony Brook had a season-high 20 shots against UNH who tallied just nine shots. Hemme made two saves for SBU in her first career start.
Stony Brook returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 9, hosting Vermont at LaValle Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
