Oct. 8, 2008

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - A goal from Michael Bustamante just two minutes into the second half proved to be the game-winner in Boston University's 1-0 win over the Stony Brook men's soccer team on Wednesday evening at LaValle Stadium. Boston University is 4-5-2, 1-1-0 in America East play while Stony Brook is 2-10-1, 0-2-0.

Off a counter attack, Aaron O'Neal crossed the ball to Bustamante, whose shot went over senior Dawid Ditrich's (Gdansk, Poland) right shoulder into the net. Stony Brook pressured Boston University much of the game but was unable to convert on its opportunities. Freshman Jherrett Maroney (Cincinnatus, N.Y.), who started his third game of the season, was impressive in the offensive zone. Maroney, making things happen, slipped a ball to junior James Palumbo (Carmel, N.Y.) but as Palumbo was about to strike the ball, Terriers keeper Hrafn Davidsson slid in and stole the ball.

In the 65th minute, Maroney continued his solid play, striking a ball off the post that rebounded into the goalie's arms. The Seawolves had one more scoring chance in the game. Sophomore Mark Secko's (Shoreham, N.Y.) throw-in sailed all the way into the box. Freshman Tom Butler (Birmingham, England) header opportunity went just over the goal post.

The Seawolves started the game forcing the Terriers back on their heels. Off a corner kick from junior Petar Rakovic (Kragujevac, Serbia) in the 3rd minute, junior Collin Geoghegan's (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) header went just over the crossbar. Less than a minute later, sophomore Greg Tinari (Holbrook, N.Y.) sent a ball to Maroney, who dribbled to his right and then blasted a shot just wide right. Stony Brook's offense continued to put on the pressure on when Tinari took a pass and hit the right post with the left foot.

While Boston University had four shots on goal, none tested Ditrich. On the other end, Stony Brook had one more chance in the first half. In the 32nd minute, a free kick found the head of junior Collin Geoghegan (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), whose quality opportunity was saved by Davidsson.

The Seawolves are back on the road for their next match when they travel to face New York rival Albany. Kick-off is slated for 3 pm.
