Sophie Reiser tallied two goals and an assist to lead the Columbia Lions to a 4-0 victory over the Stony Brook women's soccer team in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook falls to 4-5 with the loss while Columbia improves to 4-2-1.
The Seawolves nearly took the lead in the ninth minute when junior Kate Collins (Essex Fells, N.J.) broke free on the left side of the six-yard box but Columbia keeper Rebecca Taylor was able to tip the shot just wide of the net. The Lions got on the board just over five minutes later as Reiser took a pass from Marissa Schultz in the middle of the 18-yard box and put it in the lower right corner of the net.
Senior Trine Allenberg (Roberts, Wisc.) almost tied the game minutes later but Taylor was able to save the low line drive shot from 25 yards out. The Lions built their lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute as Keri Nobil knocked the ball past Viola off a Nicole Locantore corner kick.
Columbia added another goal in the 37th minute as Reiser crossed it in from the left sideline to Ashlin Yahr who tipped the ball just past Stony Brook junior goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.). The Lions headed into the break with the 3-0 lead, outshooting the Seawolves 10-8.
Reiser added her second goal of the day in the in 71st minute, receiving a cross from Yahr in the penalty area and knocking it just out of the reach of Viola to make it 4-0. Viola finished the day with the nine saves for the Seawolves while Taylor made four stops in net for the Lions.
Stony Brook returns to action on Sunday, hosting Hartford at LaValle Stadium in the Seawolves America East conference opener. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
