Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -
Goals from Krystian Witkowski and Lucas Szabo helped Marist beat the Stony Brook men's soccer team, 2-0, at Leonidoff Field on Wednesday evening. Stony Brook falls to 2-6-1 with the loss while Marist is 2-4-1.
The Seawolves took control of the ball early, earning a corner kick just 32 seconds into the match. Junior Mihailo Pavlisin (Subotica, Serbia) recorded a shot on goal but Marist goalkeeper Scott Kessler made the save. A minute later, freshman Tom Butler (Birmingham, England) had Stony Brook's second scoring chance but his attempt was saved.
The game remained at a standstill until Witkowski scored his third goal of the season after his shot deflected off the crossbar and into the net.
Stony Brook, which was without the services of many of its starters due to injury, still battled and trailed just 1-0 going into the second half.
Butler, who had two of Stony Brook's three shots on goal in the game, had another scoring chance in the 62nd minute but that too was saved. In the 78th minute, Pavlisin created an opportunity for himself in the box and was taken down but a call was not made.
Szabo added his tally in the 81st minute to give Marist a 2-0 lead.
Stony Brook faces its third ranked opponent of the season when it faces #9 Akron on Saturday evening. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
