Final Stats

Burlington, Vt. - Freshmen Meghan Gilley (Macungie, Pa.) and Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) each scored goals and senior goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.) posted her second straight shutout to lead the Stony Brook University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Vermont Catamounts in America East action on Sunday afternoon at Centennial Field. The Seawolves are now unbeaten in their last five games and are 5-7-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the America East. Vermont falls to 1-9-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the America East with the loss.

The Seawolves took the lead in the 22nd minute as sophomore Holly Razzaghi (Bloomsburg, Pa.) dribbled to the left end-line and crossed the ball to Gilley, who volleyed the ball inside the left post. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Gilley, who was named Stony Brook's America East Player of the Game.

SBU went into the half with the 1-0 advantage, outshooting the Catamounts 7-4 in the period. Viola made three saves in the first half for the Seawolves.

Freshman Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) set up Stony Brook's second goal just 48 seconds into the second half as she got loose on a breakaway down the right side of the field. Vermont goalkeeper Eliza Bradley came out of the net to cut her off but Schoenbeck slipped the ball to Kershaw who slammed the ball into the open net.

It was the third goal of the season for Kershaw, who ranks second on the team with eight points. The assist was the second in three games for Schoenbeck.

The Catamounts were unable to break through the rest of the way against Viola, who made six saves as she recorded her fourth shutout in the last five games. The Seawolves have outscored their opponents 11-1 during the five-game unbeaten streak.

Stony Brook finished the game with a 14-10 shot advantage. Bradley made five stops in net for the Catamounts.

The Seawolves return to action on Thursday, Oct. 15, hosting first-place Boston University at LaValle Stadium in a rematch of last year's America East title game. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
