Barry Rooks hurled 7.0 shutout innings to lead the Florida Atlantic Owls to a 9-1 victory over the Stony Brook University baseball team in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Florida Atlantic Stadium. The Owls used a three-run second and a four-run fifth on their way to a 10-2 win over the Seawolves in the second game. Stony Brook falls to 0-3 with the loss while the Owls improve to 5-1.
Florida Atlantic jumped to an early lead in the first game of the day as Nick DelGuidice homered to left to lead off the second. The Owls added a run in the third as Troy Bubley doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a bunt single from Anthony Mesa. Stony Brook senior southpaw Marc Brown (Lancaster, Pa.) then got Jeremy Griffiths to ground into a double play but Bubley scored on the play to give Florida Atlantic a 2-0 lead.
The Owls blew the game open in the fourth against SBU freshman reliever Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.), striking for four runs. FAU put runners on first and second with one out before Johnson struck out Bubley for the second out of the inning. But Mesa then drove a run-scoring double to left and Griffiths followed with a three-run blast to right to put Florida Atlantic up 6-0.
Florida Atlantic tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a Griffiths RBI groundout and a Travis Ozga run-scoring single. The Seawolves got on the board in the eighth as a double play grounder from senior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.) scored sophomore Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) from third.
Rooks allowed just five hits in his 7.0 innings of work to pick up the victory in game one. Brown took the loss for the Seawolves, allowing two runs and four hits in 3.0 innings. Sophomore Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.) registered two hits to lead the SBU offense.
Florida Atlantic jumped to an early lead once again in game two as David Wilson drilled a three-run home run in the bottom of the second to put the Owls on top 3-0. Florida Atlantic added a run in the third on an Orza sacrifice fly before pushing its lead to 5-0 in the fourth on a Griffiths sac fly.
The Seawolves climbed back into the game in the fifth as senior Chad Rebecca (Mount Prospect, Ill.) led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a double down the right field line by freshman Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.). Junior Chris Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) followed with an RBI groundout for the Seawolves first run of the game. Cantwell then scampered home on a Glen Troyanowski wild pitch to make it 5-2.
But the Owls put the game away in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on a Ryan Garton two-run double and Bubley two-run home run. Troyanowski picked up the win for FAU in game two, allowing two runs in 6.0 innings of work.
Sophomore Evan Stecko-Haley (Coral Springs, Fla.) took the game two loss for the Seawolves, allowing six earned runs in 4.1 innings. Cantwell led the SBU offense in game two, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The teams will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
