Conway, S.C. -
Senior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead the Stony Brook baseball team to a 6-3 victory over the IPFW Mastodons on Saturday night at the Caravelle Resort Classic. The Seawolves improve to 2-5 with the victory while IPFW falls to 1-5.
IPFW jumped on top with a run in the second as Jordan Kohler walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Devin Taylor and then came home on two-out RBI double from Jason Doerffler. The Seawolves tied the game on a RBI single from senior Keith Fier (Armonk, N.Y.) in fourth before grabbing the lead in the fifth on a three-run home run from Tansey.
The Mastodons closed to within 4-2 on a run-scoring double from Chris Gottschall in the seventh but the Seawolves got that run right back in the top of the eighth as Tansey led off with a single and then came around to score on a bunt single from freshman Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.).
Stony Brook then tacked on another run in the ninth as senior Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) walked to lead off the inning and then scored one out later on a Tansey run-scoring single. The Mastodons closed to within 6-3 in the ninth on a Mark Carden RBI single and then put runners on second and third with one out. But junior Jeremy Nowak (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) then retired the next two hitters to secure the game for the Seawolves.
Freshman Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate victory for the Seawolves, allowing just an unearned run in 4.0 innings of relief. A.J. Risedor took the loss for the Mastodons as he gave four runs on six hits in his 4.2 innings of work.
Stony Brook concludes play at the Caravelle Resort Classic on Sunday, taking on #14 Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m.
