Men's Soccer Falls To Adelphi, 2-1

Sept. 26, 2009

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Despite senior Damion Brown's (Kingston, Jamaica) first collegiate goal, Adelphi scored two second-half goals to defeat the Stony Brook men's soccer team, 2-1, at LaValle Stadium on Saturday night. The two points from Brown also were the first in 37 career games. Stony Brook is 1-7-2 while Adelphi is 5-1-2.

The Seawolves nearly took the lead in the 8th minute when freshman Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) passed to freshman Berian Gobeil (Montreal, Quebec) who made a nice run down the left side, but his shot went just wide left.

Two minutes later, Brown helped Stony Brook to a 1-0 lead. Following a foul on Adelphi, freshman Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.), who scored his first collegiate goal at Quinnipiac on Wednesday, served a free kick into the box. The 6'2'' Brown headed the ball past Adelphi keeper Thorne Holder to give the Seawolves the early lead.

In the 28th minute, sophomore Wilber Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) made a nice run with the ball in the box and was fouled from behind, setting up Stony Brook's fourth penalty kick of the season. But Bonilla's attempt was saved by Holder, and cleared away by the Panthers.

After two saves from SBU's redshirt freshman keeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, N.J.), its ensuing possession almost produced another goal. Bonilla made a brilliant move around a defender but his shot went off the right post.

Adelphi tied the game in the 50th minute when John Koutsounadis tucked a shot into the right corner and took the lead in the 70th minute with a goal from Issa Tall.

Speedy freshman Antonio Crespi (North Babylon, N.Y.) almost tied the game in the 80th minute after he beat Holder to a free ball but his shot went left of the goal.

Stony Brook begins conference play with a match at Boston University on October 3 at 7 pm.
