Durham, N.H. -
Sophomore Taryn Schoenbeck's (Newark, Del.) goal in the 12th minute gave the Stony Brook University women's soccer team a 1-0 lead but the New Hampshire Wildcats answered with goals in the 18th and 38th minute before holding on for a 2-1 victory over the Seawolves on Thursday afternoon at Lewis Field. With the loss, Stony Brook falls to 4-9-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the America East.
Freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made five saves for the Seawolves, who out-shot the Wildcats, 18-14. Schoenbeck has now recorded a point in three straight games.
UNH nearly took the lead in the opening minutes on a Carole LeBlanc shot from the top of the 18-yard box. But a diving Morales was able to deflect the shot off the post before the Seawolves cleared the ball away.
Schoenbeck gave Stony Brook the lead just 11:44 into the game as she took a pass from freshman Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.), touched it and then struck it past New Hampshire keeper Erica Correa. Morales made another spectacular save minutes later, diving to grab a header from Ashley Avitable.
The Wildcats evened the score at one just six minutes after the Seawolves took the lead on a goal from Chelsea Kuss. Shoenbeck nearly answered with her second goal of the day, drilling a shot from the left corner of the 18-yard box. The ball got past Correa but LeBlanc was on the goal line to clear the ball away.
Monique Lamotte gave New Hampshire the 2-1 advantage just over seven minutes before halftime. Morales made four saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Stony Brook came out strong in the second half, with Schoebeck again generating a scoring chance as she freed herself for a shot from the top-right corner of the 18-yard-box. But the ball hit off the crossbar as UNH held on to its one-goal lead.
Junior Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.) also had a shot to tie it, but her volley from 12 yards out also hit the crossbar. Stony Brook almost tied it in the final minute of regulation as freshman Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) won a loose ball in the box and sent a shot towards the left post that was deflected just wide by Correa.
Correa finished the game with seven stops. Stony Brook out-shot New Hampshire, 9-5, in the second half.
The Seawolves return to action next Thursday, hosting Maine at LaValle Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
