Marist Defeats Women's Soccer, 1-0

Sept. 3, 2010

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made a season-high seven saves but Merrilynn Esteve scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute to lead the Marist Red Foxes to a 1-0 victory over the Stony Brook University women's soccer team on Friday night at LaValle Stadium.

Morales made four stops in the second half for the Seawolves (0-4-0), who held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Jamie Balzarini earned the win in net for Marist, making four saves.

The Red Foxes (1-2-0) scored the only goal of the game nearly 14 minutes after intermission as Jaclynn Sabia blasted a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box. Morales made a spectacular diving save but the rebound bounced to Esteve in the middle of the penalty area and she put it into the open net.

Stony Brook nearly tied it just over five minutes later as junior Dominique Adamo (Ramsey, N.J.) took a free kick from the left side of the 18-yard box. The ball appeared headed towards the back of the net at the near corner of the goal but Balzarini was able to slide over and make the stop.

Marist almost added another goal minutes later but Samantha Panzer's shot hit off the crossbar. The Seawolves best scoring opportunity the rest of the way came with just under a minute remaining as freshman Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) got free for a head ball off a corner kick.

But the ball sailed just wide of the net and the Red Foxes were able to hold on for their first victory of the season. Marist out-shot the Seawolves, 12-9.

The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, traveling to take on No. 10 Maryland. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
